This photo was taken on a rainy afternoon, looking across the bay at Lincoln City. There’s a ton of driftwood at this beach, and I particularly liked this old stump. I used a slow shutter speed to capture the spray of the surf. If you look closely, you can see a flock of seabirds above the far shore. Photographed on November 9, 2008.

Seastack Sunset
The sun peaks through stormy weather at Yaquina Head on the Oregon coast. Photographed on November 8, 2008.
Yaquina Head Lighthouse
There are always a lot of birds around the cliffs at Yaquina Head, so I felt that including the seagull in this shot of the lighthouse helped with the sense of place. Photographed on November 8, 2008.
Lenticular Cloud
Over the course of the morning, the cloud over North Sister slowly evolved into this unusual shape. My friend informs me that it’s a lenticular cloud, even though it doesn’t have the classic “flying saucer” look to it. Photographed on September 7, 2008.
Cascades Sunrise 2
This was taken just 5-10 minutes after the previous image. The light changes very fast at this time of day. Photographed on September 7, 2008.
North Sister Sunrise
I liked being able to combine the alpenglow with the dark cloud hovering over the summit. Photographed on September 7, 2008.
Predawn Clouds
When I woke up in the morning, there were some clouds hanging over the summit of North Sister. I liked how they cast a dark shadow on the peak. Photographed on September 7, 2008.
Starry Morning
This is a single photo, not a blend of two images. It’s a long exposure taken just before sunrise. The star trails mixed with the early morning light. You can read more about how it was made in my blog post about star trail photography. Photographed on September 7, 2008.
Star Trails
My first attempt at a “star trail” image. I like being able to just see the glaciers on the mountainside. The vertical blur in the middle is actually the Milky Way. Photographed on September 7, 2008.
The Milky Way
You can see an amazing number of stars up in the Cascades. I timed it so that I would be able to place the Milky Way above the outline of the mountain. Photographed on September 7, 2008.
